How the top ranked teams did at SemifinalsThe leaderboard for Team Quarterfinals has been finalized, and we can now look ahead to Semifinals for the team competition. A top spot in Quarterfinals is a good confidence boost, and gives you a good heat placement for day 1, but can last year tell us anything of what to expect for the top teams in 2023. A look back to last year: Taking a look at the top teams from each of the 2022 Semifinals, the likelihood of advancing to the CrossFit Games is quite high, assuming of course that you aren’t using PEDs. 50% of the top ranked teams in Semifinals last year went on to win their Semifinals, with CrossFit Mayhem Freedom and CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue both winning all 6 events in their respective Semifinals. CrossFit Invictus, who have finished 2nd in World Wide Quarter Finals(WWQF) two years in a row, had 3 event wins at the Granite Games last year on their way to earning 580 of a possible 600 points. KT CrossFit was also nearly perfect in the Far East Throwdown with 6 event wins and 1 second place. Mayhem Indepence, who will be a 2 seed at the North America East Semifinal in 2023, had 4 event wins as they cruised to first place at the 2022 MACC. Another 2 teams finished second in their Semifinals after entering as the top seed. CrossFit Zarautz finished 11th in WWQF last year, but finished second at the Lowlands Throwdown behind CrossFit Reykjavik. CrossFit Selwyn finished 4th in WWQF, and finished behind CrossFit Urban Energy, who were the third ranked team, at last year’s Torian Pro. CrossFit PSC is probably the most interest case of the top ranked teams at Semifinals last year. After finishing 4th in WWQF, CrossFit PSC finished 8th at the Atlas Games. It’s difficult to determine why the significant drop occurred since who completed the Quarterfinals workouts isn’t publicly available. However Emma Lawson and Jack Farlow are CrossFit PSC athletes and competed as individuals at Atlas Games, potentially weakening their roster. CrossFit PSC was the only top ranked team to not qualify for a CrossFit Games spot last year. Lastly, 2 teams, Q21 CrossFit and CrossFit Commit Okavango were disqualified from the competition last year due to failed drug tests. Both teams “won” their semifinal with 580/600 points. In terms of sweeping events in a Semifinal, CrossFit Torian Mayhem is the favorite to do so, as they were the only team to win all 5 events in their regions Quarterfinals. |
