Justin Medeiros finished 5th at North America West Semifinals. It’s the lowest finish for him at Semifinals. In fact, it’s his lowest finish at an in-person competition since the 2018 West Regional where he finished 7th. Looking ahead to the CrossFit Games, can he go from 5th at Semifinals to Fittest on Earth? To see if history was on his side, I looked back to past champions, and their Semifinal/Regionals finish leading to the CrossFit Games. Men’s CrossFit Games ChampionsJustin Medeiros, our current two-time reigning CrossFit Games champion, finished 3rd and 1st at Semifinals during his reign as Fittest on Earth. While the sample size is small, his third place finish at the 2021 Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge, is the lowest anyone has finished in a Semifinal, and then gone on to win the CrossFit Games the same year. Mathew Fraser qualified for the CrossFit Games through regionals 3 times during the 5 years he won the CrossFit Games. In each of those 3 years, Fraser won his Regional on his way to winning the CrossFit Games. Ben Smith won the CrossFit Games in 2015. At Regionals that year, Smith finished 4th at the Atlantic Regional. This 4th place finish is the lowest finish at a Semifinal or Regional event for that year’s winner of the CrossFit Games. Rich Froning went through Regionals 3 times during his 4 CrossFit Games victories, and similar to Fraser, won his Regional each year. Women’s CrossFit Games ChampionsOn the women’s side, the results are very similar. Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr qualified for the CrossFit Games twice through Semifinals and twice through Regionals during the 6 seasons she won the CrossFit Games. In her two years of Semifinals, Toomey-Orr won her Semifinal decisively. In 2018, she also won her Regional. In 2017, when Toomey-Orr won her first CrossFit Games, she finished 2nd at the Pacific Regional. Katrin Davidsdottir, won the CrossFit Games in 2015 and 2016. In 2015 en route to her first CrossFit Games victory she finished 2nd at the Meridian regional, and in 2016 she won the East Regional on her way to the top of the podium at the CrossFit Games. In the first three seasons of the Regionals era, three women won the CrossFit Games, Annie Thorisdottir (2012), Samantha Briggs (2013), and Camille Leblanc-Bazinet (2014). Each of these women won their Regional the same year that they won the CrossFit Games. Looking back in time, only 4 times has the CrossFit Games champion failed to win their Semifinal/Regional event the same year. On the men’s side 4th is the worst finish in a qualifying event for a CrossFit Games champion. For women, 2nd place is the worst finish a CrossFit Games champion had in that year’s qualifying competition. For current favourites Justin Medeiros and Laura Horvath, who finished 5th and 3rd respectively it would be a record setting event if they won the CrossFit Games as they each would have the lowest qualifying position for a CrossFit Games champion. |

For the Love of the Game Competing at the elite level in CrossFit takes dedication, consistency and a love for the process. With the 2023 Semifinals complete, we saw nearly 600 individual athletes on the competition floor, who have all put in years of work pursuing excellence in the sport. Some of these athletes will only compete at this level once, while others return year after year. Of the 596 individual athletes at Semifinals this year, o309 competed as individuals last year as well. Only...
When do CrossFit Games athletes break out? Is there a breakthrough year at the CrossFit Games? A year where athletes show the world their true potential? To dive into this, I looked at all athletes who have finished in the top 10 as an individual at the CrossFit Games since 2017. This amounted to 56 athletes over 6 CrossFit Games seasons. Some of these athletes, like Annie Thorisdottir first made the top 10 well before 2017, while others didn’t have their rookie season until 2022. For each of...
