Horvath, HSPUs and Does It Matter? If you watched the 2022 Rogue Invitational last year, you likely saw Laura Horvath struggling to work her way through her 27 deficit paralellete hand stand push ups. Horvath finished 19th/20th in the event. Here's the thing though, she still won the competition, despite nearly 12 minutes of commentary about this hole in her game. This led to the question, does the deficiency Horvath have with HSPU, particilarily when there is a deficit have a meaningful impact of the competition results? |
Data here we come: We took a look at the competitions Laura Horvath has competed in over the last couple seasons to see what would happen if she had an average finish in the events with HSPUs. Doing analysis on a "what if she won" scenario didn't seem realistic, but a "what if she finished in the middle of the pack" seemed possible with a focus in the movement during offseason training. Based on each competition we took a look at where she would have finished on the overall leaderboard if she had an average finish in a HSPU event. For Rogue, with it's 20 athletes, this meant a 10th place finish. Moving to an average finish, would have gained Horvath one position over 6 competitions from the last two year. One. Yes, it was a podium finish, so the prize money would have been a meaningful change, but given the amount of airtime this recieves, the impact is minimal. But what about 2019? If we go back in time to the 2019 games, we find a case where being average in HSPUs may have had a large impact. Laura Horvath finished 14th at the 2019 games and missed the cutline by 21 points. Event 5 at thoose games was Mary. To gain the needed 21 points, Laura Horvath would have needed to finish 20th in the event instead of her 27th place finish. Would being average at HSPUs have given Horvath the nessecary 55 reps she would have needed to finish 20th, I'm not sure. As we enter 2023, Laura Horvath is one of the favourites to finish on top of the podium in Madison. Can she do it with a near last place finish in a HSPU event, it's hard to say, however it's not something that has held her back from success so far. One last thing: This whole conversation may be moot.β
